　『三匹の子豚』は、とてもポピュラーな昔話で、色々なバージョンが出版されています。十数冊を読み比べた結果、最もシンプルな本書を取り上げました。
　絶版になっているようですので、現物を読んでみたい方は、岡山県立図書館の蔵書を利用して下さい。
　一部をご紹介します。

最初の子豚が藁をもらうシーン
The little pigs go to look for a new home.

They see a man.

The man has some straw.

One little pig says, "Please give me some straw. 

I want to make a new home."

 

"Yes," says the man.

"Here is some straw for you.

You can make a good house with straw."

He gives the little pig some straw.


オオカミが最初の子豚を狙うシーン

Here is the big bad wolf.

He looks at the little pig in the house of straw.

"I can get that little pig," he says.

 

The wolf goes up to the house of straw.

He says, "Little pig, little pig, let me come in."

"No, no," says the little pig.

"I can not let you in."
 

"I can huff, I can puff, I can blow the house down," says the wolf.

◆TO THE RAIN

Rain, rain, go away,
Come again another day, 
Little Johnny wants to play.
Rain, rain, go to Spain,
Never show your face again.

　＊アメリカ英語では、againは[əˈɡɛn]（アゲン）と発音するのが一般的なので、Spainと韻を踏まない。イギリス英語およびアメリカ東部地域では、Spainとagainは韻を踏む。

◆SEA SHELLS

She sells sea-shells on the sea shore;
The shells that she sells are sea-shells i'm sure,
So if she sells sea-shells on the sea shore,
I'm sure that the shells are sea-shore shells.

　＊早口言葉に挑戦。sとʃの発音の違いを意識しよう。

「五月雨を集めて早し最上川」は、江戸時代の俳人松尾芭蕉（1644-1649）の『おくのほそ道』に収められています。

まずは、1語ずつ考えてみましょう。
◆五月雨（さみだれ）：旧暦の5月に降る雨、つまりは梅雨に降る雨のことです。
　研究者和英中辞典には、「五月雨」をthe long rains (of early summer)としています。ここで、May（5月）ではなくearly summer（初夏）としているのは、Mayでは旧暦の5月と季節がずれてしまうからでしょうね。
　ちなみに、「梅雨」は、the long spell of rainy weather in early summer; the rainy [wet] season; the monsoonと訳語があげてあります。ここに出てくる、spellは「期間」の意味で、「綴り」のことではありません。
　
　rainが複数形になっています。rainは物質名詞（本来は不可算名詞）なのですが、複数形で用いられることがあり、「激しい［たびたび降り注ぐ］雨」などを表すということです。（『徹底例解　ロイヤル英文法　改訂新版』）
　和英辞典にあったlongは省略できそうです。
　of early summer（初夏の） とありますが、日常的にはofよりもinを使った方が良いようです。ofを使うと、ちょっと古風な感じ、詩的な感じがするのだそうです。この「五月雨」という古い言い方に合っているということだと思います。

◆集めて早し：たくさん雨が降って、川の流れが速くなっているという状況です。
　「集める」gather, collect
　「流れる」flow, run
　「速く」   fast, quickly, rapidly, swiftly
　「最上川」the Mogami River

普通の散文で訳すと、
The Mogami River, which gathered the rains of early summer, runs rapidly.
というところでしょうか。

The Mogami Riverを最後にもってきたいので、〜ing構文（分詞構文）を使ってみます。「速く流れる」を flows swiftly、さらに主語と動詞を倒置し、2行目においた動詞と副詞も倒置してみます。

最終案は：

Gathering the rains of eary summer,
Swiftly flows
The Mogami River

相対性理論で有名なアインシュタインの言葉は、時にユーモラスで、含蓄が深いです。幾つかを紹介します。

★Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.
（2つのことが無限だ。宇宙と人間の愚かさだ。ただ、宇宙については確信があるわけではない。）

★Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.
（一度もミスをしたことが無い人は、新しいことに挑戦したことがない人だ。）

★There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as thought everything is a miracle.
（人生を生きる方法は2つしかない。1つは、奇蹟なんか一つも無いと思って生きる。もう一つは、何もかもが奇蹟だと思って生きる。）

★If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.
（自分の子どもを賢い子に育てたいなら、おとぎ話を読んでやりなさい。もっと賢い子に育てたいなら、もっとおとぎ話を読んでやりなさい。）

What's your favorite movie or TV drama?　というクラス内での「課題作文」の後、受講生のお一人が、大好きなテレビドラマ・シリーズのDownton Abbeyについて作文して来て下さいました。

以下は、添削後の文です。

Downton Abbey is a historical TV drama about an English aristocratic family and their lives in the beginning of the 20th century. The drama depicts well a peculiar life style of upper class people living in an English country house and lower class people working in it or living nearby.

Aristocracy then was declining socially and economically. The family underwent the difficult times. Still, they tried to preserve their aristocratic way of living and traditional values.
Their obstinate, sometimes ridiculous, refusal to chase after the trends of the times astonished and attracted the viewers throughout the world.

問題文

These days, more and more people like to read e-books. Do you think people will stop reading paper books in the future?

 

受講生の作文:

I don't think paper books will disappear. I think e-books will increase.

I feel that fewer people are reading paper books when traveling on trains and planes. I feel that there are fewer bookstores in the city, and the demand for paper books is decreasing. 

 

E-books need little space and easy to carry. It's also easy to search. But paper books also have their advantages. They are easy and less tiring on the eyes. Research shows that people often remember more when reading on paper than on screens. There is a sense of ownership.

 

Therefore, paper books will decrease, but they will not disappear completely. People will use paper books and e-books depending on the situation.

 

コメント：

①　I thinkやI feelなどの表現は、「〜と思う」「〜と感じる」の日本語から発想されたものだと思われますが、英語の文として読むと違和感がありました。thinkやfeelを使わずに文を組み立ててみたらどうでしょうか。

 

②　1行目のI don't think 〜について、

英語の参考書や英会話のクラスでは、「〜（では）ないと思う」は、I think that ＋否定文ではなく、I don't think that ＋肯定文にすべきであると教えています。ですが、こういうレポート形式の場合、I don't think では、何だか自信なさげに聞こえます。

 

I don't think that 〜について、『徹底例解ロイヤル英文法　改訂新版』§373否定語句の位置 では、「英語では否定後はなるべく文頭に（近いところに）置く傾向がある。原則として、否定語より右の文末までの部分が否定される。」　また、

「（2）〈I don't think ...〉の型

I don't think it will snow this evening.（今晩は雪は降らないと思う）

　この文の場合、I think it will not snow...とすることも不可能ではないが、断定をひかえるような気持ちと、否定後はなるべく文頭に近いところに置くという原則からも普通この語順が好まれる。」

と説明しています。

　「断定をひかえる」というのがミソかと思いました。ここに紹介したエッセイの筆者にとって、「紙の本は無くなりっこない」と断定したい筈です。だから、断定を控えてはいけないのだと思います。だから、この場合は、

I think that paper books will never disappear. 

で良いのではと思いました。ほかに、

It's highly unlikely that paper books will disappear. 

というのは、どうでしょう。

 

disappearの代わりにvanishを使うと、消えてしまうというのを強調できます。

 

③　第1文と第2文を合体させた方が、展開がスムースになると思います。

「E-bookは増えるけれども、紙の本が無くなる訳ではない」という展開にすれば、読む人の理解を得やすい文になるでしょう。

 

It's highly unlikely that paper books will disappear entirely, though more and more people will read e-books.

 

It's highly unlikely that paper books will vanish entirely in spite of the fact the number of e-book readers are increasing and will continue to increase.

 

次のようなのもあるかな…（ちょっと遊んでみました）

In my opinion, paper books will survive anyway, though their readers may decrease in number because of the rising affluence of e-books.

 

④第2段落

　I feel that　は不要です。feelについては改めて調べてみたいと思いますが、いずれということで…
　ここでは、代わりにI seeを使ってみましょう。on trains and planesは省略した方がスッキリするように思いますが、入れるならwhenの前の方が良いかも。

さらに、「電車や飛行機で移動中に本を読む人が減っている。町に本屋も減っている。」という内容で、紙の本の置かれた厳しい状況を説明しているわけですから、これらを第1段落の前に置いた方が良いように感じます。

で、こんな具合に

I see fewer people read paper books when traveling. There are fewer bookstores in town. Furthermore, the demand for paper books is decreasing. It's certainly a difficult situation for paper books, yet I think paper books will never disappear.

 

通勤（学）中を言いたいなら、travelingの代わりにcommuting。

I think〜を、先に提案したIt's highly unlike 〜に置き換えても良いです。

前田夕暮（1883〜1951）の歌集『生くる日に』所収。
昔、中学校の国語の教科書に載っていた記憶があります。受講生皆で協力して、8月のクラスからどうやって訳そうかと検討中。
